Shoot Tips #03

Choosing the right location is just as important as every other aspect of photography.  Lots of photographers like to spend time in the studio where everything is controlled.  Some love big houses in the San Fernando Valley.  There are a few who love their own bedrooms.  Personally, my fav is a hotel room because of the free internet, mini bar, room service, and most of all, we can make a BIG mess and not have to clean it up.  I also shoot in the studio, my place, and more, but I prefer the hotel.  In fact, I’m very proud to say we have never done a shoot in a house in the valley.

Hotels bring me choices and challenges as they’re ALL different and have their own energy.  We’ve had some amazing times in hotels and the best part is we have fotos to prove it.  How do we do this?  We book a room, go in as low key as possible, try not to make too much noise and just have fun.  So far we’ve had NO real trouble.  I’ve only blown the fuse on a floor a couple times, but they had no idea it was me.

While I love studios, I also like to change it up.  I don’t like shooting in the same one over and over again.  I get bored and look for something new.  When you choose a studio make sure they are cool with the mess and the naked grrls.  Be clear with the owners.  They don’t like it when they walk in and a naked grrl is making a mess on their floor.

Whatever you choose, make sure it works for you and all you want to get from your shoot.  Keep it simple, affordable and comfortable.  Most importantly, when it comes to renting a home, be sure to clean up after your shoot and leave it the same way you walked in.  Don’t be a slob.  Not nice at all!
