Today’s tip is a fun one, but then again, it’s always fun!  I’d like to talk about cameras today, but more specifically, Canon 7D’s, 5D’s, and Nikons.  Some prefer BIG expensive Hasselblads, while other don’t give a fuck and use what ever they can get their hands on.  I’m for ALL of the above, but have some simple suggestions.

What ever you use, learn everything about it that you can.  Get to know the ins and outs of every inch of that camera.  My rule is simple: you should be able to shoot no matter how drunk and fucked up you are.  The more you know, the easier it is.

Start with one lens, get used to it, and know what you’re going to see even before pick up the camera.  I always tell my assistants and interns to learn everything you can about your camera and lens before you run out and buy another.  Before you’re getting paid to do a job, you should know how that camera works.  It does NOT build confidence if you are playing around with your camera in front of your client.  So, if you’re unsure as to how to use your camera, hire an assistant to teach you.  I know all this takes time, but you need to take the time to learn about your most important tool.

So many people become equipment whores!  They want it all just so they can show off.  They think the chicks will dig them and they’ll get better pictures in the end.  Keep it simple, fool.  I use one camera and one lens.  I know it’s probably because I’m a lazy fuck.  But, it’s also because I know everything about my baby!  She treats me just right.  So, there you go – some basic thoughts on basic gear.  If you have any questions, please let me know.  I’ll do my best to answer.  Now, back to work.
